Those who say that a surgery and healthy living cannot change your life should meet Mayra Rosales. Today this woman is a beacon of strength and hope, someone who has lived through the worst and come out with scars to prove it. But a decade ago, her life looked bleak, hopeless and a swirling quagmire of misery. In 2008 Mayra Rosales was being tried for the murder of her nephew Eliseo (2). She weighed more than 1,000 pounds and was being charged with capital punishment for smothering the child by rolling on top of him with her heavy body. The charges were later dropped when prosecutors proved that she couldn’t have committed the crime. Her body frame made it impossible for her to do so. She later confessed that she took the blame in order to protect her sister Jamie, who had not only abused the child, but also grievously injured him resulting in his death. “I thought I was dying anyway, so I decided to admit that I’d done it to protect my sister because I love her,” Rosales told of the confession in an interview.
But unlike the charges, her weight didn’t simply drop. Mayra’s journey of weight loss is a long battle that she arduously fought along with her doctors. Morbid obesity is a disease like any other. The only thing that makes obesity much worse is that it is also a harbinger of many other diseases. An obese person is susceptible to cardiovascular diseases, blood pressure issues, diabetes, bone and joint trouble and skin disorders. These are a mere glimpse of what your body suffers as you put it through the grind of eating and inability to lose the fat you gain. What saved Mayra’s life were the surgeries she had. She had quite a few surgeries, including a Laparoscopic Gastric Banding Surgery, also known as a lap band surgery. Banding is ideal for patients who are morbidly obese and is a completely reversible procedure. It takes just 30–60 minutes to perform. This is a keyhole surgery wherein a silicone band is wrapped around the upper part of the stomach to create a smaller stomach, leaving a passage between this and the lower compartment to allow food to pass through.
As the smaller space fills quickly, the patient eats less than they would on an unobstructed stomach. This less consumption of food helps limit a patient’s appetite. The band can be tightened or loosened in order to control the patient’s need to eat. The band is tightened by injecting saline into it (it’s called a gastric fill), or drained to loosen it. Gastric banding helps tremendously with weight loss. Along with limited food, a patient when helped with exercise can easily lose a good amount of weight and lead a normal life. Mayra Rosales certainly has a new lease on life today. She has lost about 800 pounds of her previous weight! She is currently helping others with their weight issues and inspiring them as well. Her body shape and her health both have improved “I’m not diabetic, I do not have high cholesterol, I do not have high blood pressure, ‘Now I’m okay and my organs are perfect” said Rosales in an interview.
